Frequently Asked Questions

How do I keep the bed clean?
Unlike conventional cushion based dog beds, the Hound Sleeper is really easy to clean. First, beat the dirt off the canvas. Then prop the bed against a wall and using soapy water to which Savlon or Dettol have been added (to disinfect the bed) scrub the canvas and sides down with a floor brush. Then simply rinse off with clean water or hose off and leave to dry in the sun. This should be done at least once a week if blankets are not used on top of the bed. If you use blankets, then you will still need to wash the blankets at least once a week.
How do I get my dog to use the bed?
Most dogs will not have a problem getting on the bed especially if you put their favourite blanket on the bed. The bed is also big enough for dogs to circle before lying down ensuring they are secure in their new sleeping arrangement.
My dog is big, won’t the bed break?
The bed is structurally sound: its strong frame and durable double layer fabric can comfortably carry the weight of dogs in excess of 70 kilograms.
My dog is smaller than those in the picture, can they use the bed?
Smaller dogs can also benefit from using the Hound Sleeper. For the same reasons as bigger dogs, the bed is comfortable and more hygienic than a cushion based one on the ground. In many instances, more than one small dog can use the same bed.
The bed looks heavy; won’t it be difficult to move it around?
Despite their durability, the Hound Sleeper beds are actually quite light weighing approximately 6kgs. This means that they are very easy to move and transport (for cleaning etc). However, the rubber stoppers at the end of the legs will prevent the bed from slipping on tiles or wooden floors
Will the bed be comfortable enough for my dog?
The Hound Sleeper is very comfortable on its own but owners can now also purchase a fitted blanket or a set of blankets for your Hound Sleeper. During the winter months when we advised Hound Sleeper lovers that we sold fitted polar fleece blankets to keep a man’s best friend warm and comfortable we had an unprecedented demand for these fitted blankets.
This led us to source warmer and better quality blankets for all our Hound Sleeper fans. We are proud to now have our own ‘branded’ blankets. I am sure your dog loves his or her blanket no matter whether it is summer or winter. Colours available and prices are on the ‘Products & Prices’ page.
What happens if my dog scratches the bed?
Consistently scratching the fabric with their sometimes sharp claws ought to be discouraged, as with all fabrics, this will damage the fabric over time. For dogs that like to chew or destroy their bed – there is a product called ‘Bitter Solution’ by AVERT obtainable from your VET or VET Shop. Spray this across the corners and around the frame if necessary. In most cases, this will help protect your cover. Remember to spray the bed again after every wash until the dog stops ripping his bed. Should your dog damage the cover completely, replacement covers are available
